Ion Park, Ford’s future battery research and development center, will be built in Romulus (Michigan), where it will employ 200 engineers and a range of state-of-the-art equipment. Gretchen Whitmer, Michigan Governor, stated that Ford’s investment in battery development and research would support hundreds of well-paying jobs, as well as help maintain leadership in advanced mobility, manufacturing, and transportation.

The Ion Park facility is intended to accelerate Ford’s eventual goal of producing its own batteries in-house as part of its future electric power systems known as IonBoost. Ford expects to transition to an all-electric lineup in North America eventually but has not yet set a date for that to happen. Ford is already delivering on its plan to lead an electric revolution with the Mustang Mach-E, 2022 E-Transit, and the 2022 F-150 Lightning.
